Industrial Motor Control using Fuji Manual Motor Starters

Fuji Manual Motor Starters

AutomationDirect has partnered with Fuji Electric to offer a complete line of electric motor control products.

We now offer Fuji's DUO series line of motor contactors, overload relays, and manual motor starters, as well as their Odyssey line of large contactors and overloads. These motor controller product lines provide complete industrial motor control solutions up to 300 horsepower at 480 VAC.

Fuji's DUO line of components are fully integrated and can be used to build a conventional contactor/ overload starter, or the Fuji manual motor starter (MMS) can be combined with an SC-E series contactor for a combination starter. Since the MMS is UL listed for Category E self-protected motor control, it can be used for motor branch circuit protection without the need for additional protection such as fuses or molded case circuit breakers.

NOTE: Recent changes in UL 508 now require that short circuit trip contacts should be added to the MMS, and a terminal cover should be added to the 32 amp frame size MMS.

AutomationDirect offers the MMS in a 32-Amp version with a 45 mm frame width and a 63-Amp version with a 55 mm frame width.

Both MMS versions have high breaking capacities, up to 100,000 Amps in some ranges. The MMS combination starters can accommodate motors up to 40 horsepower at 480 VAC. The conventional starters in the DUO line can accommodate motors up to 100 horsepower at 480 VAC.

The DUO line is available in 24 VAC, 24 VDC, 120 VAC, and 240 VAC coil versions.

Short circuit protection

The BM3 Series manual motor starters (MMS) provide new circuit breakers for motor use that provide optimal protection by integrating the functions of a molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) and thermal overload relay into a highly compact unit. The BM3 Series manual motor starters (MMS) provide magnetic short circuit protection. This short circuit trip rating is approximately 13 times the FLA rating of the overload function.

Thermal overload relay functions

Thermal overload relay functions include:

  • Overload protection
  • Phase-loss protection
  • Rated current adjustment
  • Ambient temperature compensation

Manual motor starter advantages

Innovative technology has integrated the functions of a molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) and a thermal overload relay.
The advantages of this new technology include:

  • Compactness
Mounting space: MCCB + Thermal overload relay: 100%
    MMS: 43% (57% reduction)

  • High breaking capacity
    50, 100 kA 400 VAC
NOTE: See specific ratings for each MMS at the operating voltage.

  • IEC short circuit protective coordination
    IEC 60947-4-1 Type 1, 2

  • Reduction in wiring work
MCCB + Contactor + Thermal overload relay: 100%
    MMS + Contactor: 50% (50% reduction)

  • Standards
    UL 508, CSA C22.2 No.14, IEC 60947-1, 60947-2, 60947-4-1

  • Ecologically friendly design
    - Recyclable thermoplastic resin used in plastic parts
    - Indication of materials used
    - Cadmium-free contacts

Manual motor starter (MMS) applications

Described below are typical problems encountered in conventional systems, along with the solution offered using the MMS system.

  • Short-circuit breaking protection
When numerous small and medium motor loads exist in a circuit requiring high breaking capacity, there is no high-breaking capacity circuit breaker with a small rated current for short-circuit protection.

The MMS can be used in 100 kA short-circuit current circuits for three-phase, 240 V motors with rated capacity up to 15 kW, and in 50 kA short-circuit current circuits for three-phase, 415 V motors with rated capacity up to 30 kW.

  • Back-up breaking system
When a back-up molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) is installed upstream to solve the problem described in "short-circuit breaking protection" above, a short in one of the load circuits also trips the upstream breaker and stops the other operating load circuits.

Despite their compact size, the 32AF and 63AF MMS provide high-performance short-circuit current breaking. They eliminate the need for an upstream circuit breaker for back-up use.

  • Overload protection
Motor protection breakers cannot be adjusted to match the rated current of the motor being protected.

Equipped with a wide-range current adjustment dial (with maximum/ minimum ratio of 1.4 to 1.6), the MMS easily adjusts to match the rated current of the motor, for optimum protection.

  • Control panel size
Considerable space is required to install a back-up circuit breaker or a combination starter consisting of a circuit breaker and a thermal overload relay. As a result, the panel size has to be increased.

The compact size of the MMS, including thermal overload relay functions, enables a smaller installation area with less wiring space, for a reduction in panel size.

Optional Accessories

A wide variety of accessories enables a flexible response to changes in specifications.
Snap-on fittings speed up mounting. Accessories like auxiliary contact blocks, shunt trip devices, and undervoltage trip devices have been standardized for the 45 mm and 55 mm wide frame sizes of the BM3R and BM3V. Enclosures and external operating handles are available as optional accessories. Accessories are easily mounted.

  • Auxiliary contact blocks
Internally mountable auxiliary contact blocks and alarm contact blocks can be frontally mounted.
Externally mountable auxiliary contact blocks can be mounted on the left side.
Auxiliary contact blocks are linked to the ON/ OFF operation of the MMS.
Up to two contact blocks can be mounted to the right/ left front, and up to two contact blocks can be mounted to the left side.

  • Alarm contact blocks operate when the MMS trips due to overload, phase-loss, or short-circuit. It is not linked to the ON/ OFF operation of the MMS.
An alarm is displayed in the contact block’s indicator when the alarm contact operates.
NOTE: Operation can be checked with the test trip function.

  • Shunt trip and undervoltage trip devices
A shunt trip device is used to remotely trip the MMS. An undervoltage trip device automatically trips the MMS when the control circuit voltage drops below the specified value. Shunt trip and undervoltage trip devices are available in a variety of operating coil voltage ranges.

  • Standard and emergency external handles are available.
External operating handles for the MMS are used to operate the MMS mounted in the enclosure from the outside of the panel.
An interlock mechanism prevents someone from mistakenly opening the panel door when the MMS is in the ON state (with a screw release).
The shaft can be cut to match the distance between the MMS and the panel door.
    OFF lock function.
Can be locked OFF with up to three padlocks.
NOTE: Padlocks are to be provided by the customer.

  • Screw mount kit
Used only when DIN rail mounting is not used. Lugs push into the back of the MMS and provide a sturdy lug for direct panel mounting. 10 pieces per package.

  • Busbar
For connecting muliple manual motor starters with and without accessories. May require a feed-in terminal for connecting line power to the bus.

  • Link modules
For electrically connecting MMS to a contactor.

  • Base plates
For mounting MMS and contactor for a combination starter.
