Pros: ease of use, value for the money relative to competition, nice import of database functionality. Cons: programming software is buggy - simulation feature bombs, panel locks up on transfer of project if a dynamic object (data link) overlaps 'unfavorably' with another object or a few pixels are off screen, dynamic/animated bit maps are only discrete/digital (0/1) so it is not possible to make a 3-state switch (off / On / Auto) or animated graphics beyond 2 layers - very limiting. Also, no Find/Replace of database tags - ie. if you make a screen for Oven1 and then you want to use that as a template for Oven2, you have to re-key all the tags on the screen. Lots of room for improvement on the programming software for the panel and the firmware for the panel. If the EA1-S3ML does not improve in those regards, I will have to look at other possible automation solutions. But, even now, for the money, for small applications, this product is hard to beat. -Andrew H, industrial control/automation engineer

Kevin in WIXOM, MI wrote : 11/26/08 Purchased 1st item, was zapped by chowderhead electrician wiring 120Vac into 24Vdc connection. Unit not repairable, according to TechSupport. Disassembled, appeared that a sacrificial resistor blew when connected. But not fixable. Design should be more robust & forgiving. A-D should have a repair function for this. Purchased 2nd item as replacement. Noticed that the display quality of 2nd item was much better than 1st item. 1st item had vertical lines or slight shading on the left hand side of the display, 2nd item clearly did not. Assumed this was a quality control problem, or the 1st unit was returned-resold. I like the concept of the display separate from the keyboard bezel. Programming software is pretty good. Help File needs more examples and "how-to" and tutorials rather than extensive descriptions of what a function IS. Nobody has time to learn something anymore, just show me how to do it. I'll read about it later. I can see what a function IS, I need to know how to IMPLEMENT and USE the function. I found it generally easy to program and implement because I was familiar with the general concept from other HMIs. Pretty good selection of function tools, suitable for my purpose. Some of the graphic icons are too clunky and gobble up useful screen real-estate. Wish I had a few more color selections, but not willing to pay more for it. Graphic resolution should be better for such a small screen, and also because this is almost 2009. Low resolution & text font selection makes it hard for me to put in identifying text in buttons, labels, switches, etc. Get rid of the Serif-type fonts, use only San-Sefif fonts for visual clarity. Disappointed with graph capability. Not useful with so few points. Put in a USB or other suitable port on the item itself. Don't make me purchase YET ANOTHER CABLE for a A-D product!

I am using it on many small and medium size projects. Any project that requires at least one timer or counter is a good candidate for a small PLC and a touch screen. It's cost effective and better solution then a use of descrite components. Joseph

I had trouble programming the display because there were not enough samples on writing the program. I am going to buy the new 6" display EA1-S6ML for a couple of more test stands I am building.
